We are approaching your 9th birthday and when I look back, I distinctly remember how joyful your previous birthday celebrations have been—from planning; to designing the invites; making the decorations; and having a lovely group of friends around to celebrate!
Until you were 6, life for us as a family was erratic. During this time, we moved out of the US to India twice–the first time when you were less than 4 months old and again when you were 2 ½ years old. The reason for this was that we wanted to be with your grandparents who needed us the most during those times. Throughout all this you were exceptional—adjusted to 3 different preschools, 4 different homes, and made new friends along the way before entering Kindergarten. It was an emotionally tumultuous time for all of us.
Due to the uncertainty of our situation, and not knowing when we would have to move again, we lived in small apartments and tried to keep our belongings to minimal. But as a family we made the most of every circumstance and found joy in small things and moments. And of course, we couldn’t have done any of this without the love and support from our families and friends.
For me, birthdays are not only about celebrating you and what you like, but also our way of showing you how grateful we are to have you in our lives. Here are a few photo memories from your birthday celebrations. Your preferences are changing and so will your parties and pretty soon you won’t need our help with the planning, which is a bittersweet feeling! I hope your upcoming birthday and the many more to follow are as memorable as the ones before and you always are fortunate to celebrate with the people you love!
I want you to know that we have no regrets for what we have gone through and when life throws you a curveball, focus on the positive. Follow your heart and be there for people you love; by doing this, there will be times when you will feel you have taken a step back in achieving your goals. But, trust me; you will always come out ahead when it’s all done.
Like we did!
